129 - Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

“All your life has been spent in pursuit of archaeological relics. Inside the Ark are treasures beyond your wildest aspirations. You want to see it opened as well as I. Indiana, we are simply passing through history. This is history.”

With the Dial of Destiny releasing in summer this year, THCC go back to review the previous instalments of the classic franchise, starting with the one that started it all, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

It is 1936, three years before the start of WWII and professor / archaeologist Henry 'Indiana' Jones is sent to the deserts of Egypt to find and recover the long-lost Ark of the Covenant and protect it from the villainous Nazis. We discuss the historical context of the setting, themes of masculinity, science v religion and imperialism and how this film changed the action-adventure genre forever!
