160 - Cases of Conspiracy 13: The Gunpowder Plot
On Thursday, May 20, 1604, five Catholic men gathered at a London house to orchestrate a plot to assassinate the reigning English monarch, James I (1603-1625).
For the past century, the English kingdom became split between two branches of Christianity, Protestantism and Catholicism. The rise of Protestantism led to the persecution against Catholics and any Papal supporters.
This culminated in a plot led by Robert Catesby to strike back against the Protestant government and return England to Catholic rule.
The plot failed and gave rise to a significant event in British history, Bonfire Night!
In this case of conspiracy, we discuss the underlying causes of the plot, how it was uncovered, what role Guy Fawkes played and the long enduring legacy of the event!
